Proofpoint Essentials has been renamed: Proofpoint's own MSP page states it is now Proofpoint 365 Total Protection, a Microsoft 365 email security, backup, archiving and awareness training suite for small and mid-sized businesses, sold through MSPs on unpublished, package-based pricing rather than a listed per-user rate.

Proofpoint Essentials, the email security product Proofpoint sold to small and mid-sized businesses through MSPs, is no longer sold under that name. Proofpoint's own MSP partner page states plainly that "Proofpoint Essentials is now Proofpoint 365 Total Protection," an all-in-one Microsoft 365 security suite built on technology from Hornetsecurity, the Microsoft 365 security specialist Proofpoint acquired for 1.8 billion dollars in a deal that closed in December 2025. Proofpoint introduced 365 Total Protection to MSPs and SMBs in North America under a newly created MSP Platform business unit in May 2026, alongside a Pax8 Marketplace listing. Existing Proofpoint Essentials customers can still sign in through the legacy Essentials portal and its own support community, but all current marketing, sales and the vendor's product page now sit under the 365 Total Protection name.
365 Total Protection filters phishing, malware, spam and business email compromise ahead of a client's Microsoft 365 mailbox, deployed either through MX routing or an API-based connection. It bundles email continuity so mail keeps moving during an outage, compliant email archiving, automated backup and recovery for Exchange, OneDrive, SharePoint and Teams, centralised DMARC, DKIM and SPF management through a DMARC Manager module, S/MIME and PGP email encryption, data loss prevention, and a security awareness training module with phishing simulations, all run from one multi-tenant console built for MSPs, who get a single contract and bill covering every client tenant. Unlike Proofpoint Essentials, which also covered Google Workspace, every current Proofpoint page for this product describes Microsoft 365 only, so an MSP with Google Workspace clients should not assume the same coverage carries over.
Proofpoint does not publish a per-user, per-mailbox or package price for 365 Total Protection; it is quoted through an MSP or partner and described only as tailored to budget and requirements, with a free trial available (checked September 2026). Proofpoint is based in Sunnyvale, California, was founded in 2002, and has been owned by the private equity firm Thoma Bravo since 2021. An MSP already selling Proofpoint Essentials should ask its Proofpoint contact directly how existing client tenants and agreed pricing migrate to 365 Total Protection, and whether Google Workspace clients need a different product, before comparing it against Mimecast, Microsoft's own Defender for Office 365, or Hornetsecurity's own 365 Total Protection sold directly rather than through Proofpoint's channel.
